Google Analytics Consulting: Properly Set Up and Create Reports in Google Analytics

ARE YOU GETTING THE DATA THAT YOU NEED FROM GOOGLE ANALYTICS?

Google Analytics is the most common tool used by companies. In fact, it is usually the first tool that any new website or app installs and yet, most companies don’t get any value out of it.

This is not because of a lack of data. You simply install a piece of code on your website and you instantly have acess to hundreds of metrics. It’s almost magical.

There’s actually two reasons why most companies don’t get any value out of Google Analytics and they are:

  1. Thinking Implementing Google Analytics is easy
  2. Hoping that Reports Will Be Easy to Create

PROBLEM #1: THINKING IMPLEMENTING GOOGLE ANALYTICS IS EASY

When I tell companies that implementing Google Analytics isn’t easy, they are shocked. After all, it took them 5 minutes to start collecting data. How hard can it be when it took us 5 mins?

I then go on to explain them that implementing Google Analytics is more than just adding a piece of code to your website. That is simply the last step in a multi step process and the steps that come before are crucial.

Adding this piece of code to your website is easy but properly implementing Google Analytics isn't.
Adding this piece of code to your website is easy but properly implementing Google Analytics isn't.

The steps before you add the piece of code to your website will answer questions like:

  • What metrics are relevant to our business?
  • What metrics will help us get to the next stage e.g. funding round, milestone, etc.?
  • How can generate the reports that we need from Google Analytics?
  • Do we need any special features like ecommerce tracking, cross domain tracking, etc?

These are the questions that companies skip and instead just jump into collecting data. They then end up with tons of data but without any idea of what to do with the data.

Some companies even end up with unreliable data due to a technical implementation error. In both cases, you end up not using any of the data that you’re collecting.

PROBLEM #2: HOPING THAT REPORTS WILL BE EASY TO CREATE

The second problem that you will run into is around how to create the reports that you need.

Google Analytics offers beautiful built in reports that also happen to overwhelm you with hundreds of useless metrics.

It might be interesting to see that your bounce rate is 40% but is that really helping you get more customers, reduce your marketing costs or something else?

Some companies then try to create reports using dashboards, custom reports and perhaps even exporting the data into Excel. However, since they skip the crucial planning steps before implementing Google Analytics, they have no idea what metrics & dimensions they actually need to be looking at.

OUR ANALYTICS PROCESS IS FOCUSED ON RESULTS, NOT TOOLS

1

Start With Your Goals

Before implementing any tool, we work with you to understand what business goals you’re trying to achieve and how analytics data can get you there. This means figuring out what reports you want to see and what tools can give you that data.

2

Create a Tracking Plan

Once we know which business goals are important to you, we create a tracking plan that defines what data events and properties you need to capture and how those events will help you generate the reports & metrics from step 1.

3

Implement the Tracking Events

After finalizing the tracking plan, we work with your team to help you implement this plan within your app or website. The tracking code implementation can either be done by us or by your in-house development team.

4

Training & Report Creation

Finally, we work with you to understand how to analyze your data and how to create the necessary reports in an automated fashion that will give you the insights needed to reach your business goals.

FAQS

CAN YOUR TEAM DO THE TRACKING CODE IMPLEMENTATION INSTEAD OF OUR TEAM?

Yes, we can do the tracking code implementation. However, we have found that it’s much easier to let in-house developers handle the actual code implementation since they understand how the product works (from a technical perspective) much better than we do. Please get in touch for more information.

HOW LONG DOES AN IMPLEMENTATION TAKE?

Creating the tracking plan can be done within 1-3 weeks but the event implementation can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks depending on how much spare development resources you have.

WHAT IF I ALREADY STARTED COLLECTING DATA?

That’s not a problem but we still have to run through our analytics process. When we create our tracking plan, we will try to take into account any existing data you’re already collecting.
